Stone product display samples

High quality display materials for premium stone products

Project background

Tectonix specialises in the supply of natural stone and masonry products for the landscaping industry. The company sources quality products from around the world, supplying these for projects designed to enhance both commercial and residential built environments.

The challenge

Tectonix was looking to source an innovative way of displaying samples of these stone finishes in a retail environment. The display had to be eye catching and creative, yet robust and informative. In addition, the display method needed to hold the stone correctly and display it to its best advantage from every angle. Portability was a further consideration.

The solution

  1. Initial consultation meeting to research the products to be displayed and the overall display requirement
  2. Development of the creative proposal and visual presentation of the proposed solution
  3. Creation of a prototype
  4. Installation of the first prototype in store

The result

Following an initial meeting to discuss the requirement, the design team looked closely at the product itself and the existing branding. The objective was to come up with a design solution that matched existing collateral but provided a totally new approach to displaying stone product in a retail environment.

“From initial concept through to production, our experience has been absolutely first class on this project. Really understanding my initial brief and coming up with a creative and innovative solution (including prototype) within days to meet a challenging deadline.”

Effective retail displays for stone products

Stone samples are essentially irregular in terms of a level finish. The team made the decision to mount each individual sample on a 5mm grey Foamex backboard, which gave each sample a regular size and finish. It also provided a surface suitable for printing, to carry brand and sample information on each.

Creativity and inspiration in action

To support the samples, a base was developed which reflected the existing Tectonix logo in terms of shape and form. This was designed with two levels separated by 30mm upstands, with the top level routed out to accept the base of the Foamex board carrying each individual sample. The base boards were produced using the same grey Foamex as the sample pieces, creating an attractive and uniform finish.

“We were actually inspired by Stonehenge,” stated designer Nikki Jarvis-Jones. Presenting the samples almost as stone monoliths reflects the tactile quality of these premium products. Removing the samples for inspection is easy, and when on display they sit securely in the base boards.”

Fast response and rapid turnaround of prototype

This was a rapid response requirement. From initial discussions through to production of the first prototype took less than a week, with all design and production work carried out in house. Total control over production and quality allowed the team to match the time requirements of Tectonix, who wanted to place the first display stand in store within days.

The team is now looking at the production of further product presentation stands, which would include sample pieces at different sizes and height levels to add to the individuality of the display.
